Aid to families in the form of food is even delivered to the homes of people over 65 who, due to disability or health reasons, cannot come to the Mallorca Sense Fam headquarters. These efforts primarily cover the basic needs of the most disadvantaged neighborhoods in the city. For 2021, the goal is to expand the area of action to more neighborhoods in Palma and to some towns in Mallorca. The food aid comes from various institutions, volunteer events, and donations from private companies.
Large companies in the food and energy sectors, banks, and even major businesses from the yachting industry help to alleviate poverty and the lack of basic necessities among some disadvantaged families in Mallorca. One of these companies is Astilleros de Mallorca.
Almost five years ago, the warehouse manager at Astilleros de Mallorca, Pepe Allegue, noticed that some yachts undergoing repairs at the shipyard were carrying out major overhauls of their pantries and kitchens. It didn’t take long for Pepe to get in touch with Mallorca Sense Fam to arrange the donation of rice, pasta, canned goods, and other food items that the superyachts wanted to replace but didn't want to waste. The crews, captains, and owners of these yachts wanted these products to be put to good use.
This is how a natural symbiosis was born between the yachts under repair and the volunteers from Mallorca Sense Fam, who send a van almost every week to Astilleros de Mallorca to collect hundreds of kilos of products in perfect condition.
Over time, everyone involved in this relationship learned that it wasn’t just the food that could be reused. Other items frequently replaced on superyachts could also be useful to the Mallorcan organization. Mattresses, books, toys, and especially kitchen items like pots, pans, glasses, and trays are anonymously donated by yachts to the Astilleros de Mallorca warehouse, where Pepe organizes, packs, and quickly delivers them to Mallorca Sense Fam. Some of these items, such as cooking equipment and disposable supplies, are sent directly to soup kitchens. Others are sold by the volunteers at charity markets to raise funds that are then used to purchase fresh food.
In this way, a natural relationship has been established between the yachts being repaired at Astilleros de Mallorca and Mallorca Sense Fam. Resources are reused properly, food is not wasted, and even the most unexpected objects are transformed into rice or bread that ends up on the plates of those who need it most.
